The story of The Hellenic Deli started at home in 2010.
My father started the business from our home because he needed to look after me and my two siblings. Rather than seeing this as a reason not to work, he found a way to build a small business around his family. He started by supplying and selling Greek food products, something he knew well and was passionate about.
What began as a small home-based business gradually grew. We have always believed that Greek food should be about quality, authenticity and good ingredients, not just putting the word Greek on a label.
My father wanted to bring products that he knew and trusted to people in the UK who missed the food they knew from Greece, as well as to people discovering Greek food for the first time.
Over the years, the business has changed with the way people shop. What started from home has developed into an online Greek deli, allowing us to reach customers across the UK rather than just locally.
I have continued building on what my father started, and The Hellenic Deli is still very much a family business. We choose the products carefully, work with suppliers we trust and try to give customers the sort of personal service they would expect from a traditional Greek deli.
For me, the business is more than just selling food online. It is something my father created for our family at a time when looking after his children was his priority, and I am proud to continue what he started.
The ambition now is to take the business further while keeping the same values that it was built on: genuine Greek products, quality and a personal approach.
What makes The Hellenic Deli different is the way we source our products.
We don't simply buy Greek products from large export companies or wholesalers. We work directly with individual artisan producers in Greece.
We build personal relationships with the people who actually make the products, and over time that has developed into a real relationship based on trust.
For us, knowing who makes the food is very important. We want to know where a product comes from, how it is made and, most importantly, that the person producing it takes the same pride in their product that we take in selling it.
Many of the producers we work with are small businesses themselves. They may produce a fantastic olive oil, honey, olives or other Greek speciality, but they don't necessarily have the size or resources to reach customers in the UK on their own. We can help bring those products to people here.
That personal connection also means we are much more selective about what we sell. We don't want hundreds of products just for the sake of having a big range. We want products that we genuinely believe in and would be happy to have in our own homes.
I think that is what makes The Hellenic Deli different. Behind many of the products on our website there is a person, a family and a small producer in Greece that we know and trust.
We are trying to bring that relationship and authenticity to customers in the UK, rather than simply selling another mass-produced product with a Greek label on it.
